We started with organically-produced and humanely-harvested beeswax from local beekeepers that is triple-filtered and added the finest natural ingredients we possibly could:

    Cosmetic-grade Lanolin (wool wax)

Has exceptional emollient properties. It replicates the natural lubrication of animal skin, softening leather, preventing it from drying and allowing the fibres to move smoothly across each other and so reduces abrasive wear. It is both water-retaining and repellent.

    Natural T1 Carnauba Wax

Known as the 'queen of waxes' because it is the hardest of all the natural waxes. 'T1' is the highest grade. It provides a crystal-clear, hard-wearing, non-greasy waterproof finish that allows the natural colour of the leather to shine through while locking-in the softening oils and emollients.

    Sweet Almond and Coconut Oils

Over time the natural tanning oils evaporate out of the hide. The smell of leather comes from these oils. If not replaced, leather will eventually dry out completely and become brittle and crack. We add these oils as a pleasant-smelling top-up to the lubricating tanning oils.

    Cocoa Butter

A natural emollient with great stability. This quality, coupled with natural antioxidants, its velvety texture, pleasant fragrance and emollient properties have made it a popular ingredient in soaps and lotions.

Without protection, the sun's UV radiation breaks down leather's structural proteins and causes the material to dry out, crack, and eventually deteriorate. We've added a specialised UV absorber to our leather balsam that extends your leather's lifespan by intercepting this damaging radiation before it can harm the material. This protection is especially valuable for leather items regularly exposed to sunlight, such as car interiors, furniture, and outdoor equipment.

Our UV absorber works by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation and converting it primarily into heat energy.

    It protects the leather by:

    • Reducing the amount of UV rays that reach and damage the leather's collagen fibres
    • Stopping photooxidation that leads to fading, discolouration, and weakening of the leather
    • Disrupting the free radical chain reactions that accelerate leather degradation
    • Creating a sacrificial barrier that absorbs UV radiation instead of the leather itself

    HOW IT WORKS

The physics behind it is fascinating - it functions through a process called photophysical deactivation:

    1. The UV absorber molecule absorbs high-energy UV photons. This raises the molecule to an excited state
    2. The molecule then dissipates this energy as harmless heat through 'vibrational relaxation'
    3. The molecule returns to its ground state, ready to absorb more UV radiation

Environmental preservation is very important to us and we make every effort to ensure our products have a minimal impact on the environment:

    • Our leather balsam is composed of natural oils and waxes, ensuring an environment that is free of hazardous chemicals, as well as completely safe for children. The absence of petrochemicals makes this product a reliable choice.
    • We are not driven by a corporate cost-reduction ethos. We select our components based on quality and sustainability rather than the cheapest alternatives
    • 100% Plastic-free recyclable packaging
    • Recycled cardboard and paper from FSC-approved mixed sources
    • Packing tape that is paper & cotton based with a water-based gum adhesive which can be recycled along with the cardboard boxes
    • No polypropylene-based tape. We use biodegradable raffia twine.
    • Our workshop roof is completely covered in solar panels and generates far more electricity than we consume

Gilboy's Leather Balsam is used to condition and nourish leather, replacing essential oils lost over time and extending the life of the item. It's applied to a clean, soft cloth and rubbed into the leather surface, ensuring it soaks in and is absorbed.

    1. Prepare the Leather: Clean the leather with a suitable cleaner if needed and ensure it is dry before applying the balsam
    2. Apply the Balsam: Apply a small amount to a clean, soft cloth and rub onto the leather surface, working it in thoroughly
    3. Allow Time to Absorb: Let the balsam sit for a few hours to fully absorb into the leather, then buff with a soft cloth if desired for extra shine

    IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

Gilboy's Balsam should not be used on suede or nubuck leather. Always test on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't darken the leather.

    APPLICATION TIP:

For larger leather items like sofas or car seats, work in manageable sections. Apply the balsam sparingly - a little goes a long way. Regular conditioning with Gilboy's Leather Balsam will keep your leather soft, supple and protected for years to come.

    ‘New’ Sofa

Our 20 year old leather sofa was looking decidedly tired. This leather balm was easy to apply and has really bought the leather back to a fresh state, and looks and feels sooo much better. Thoroughly recommend. Photo shows the half way point, although it does not show the improvement at its best.

    Fabulous natural product

I have now used this product on my beloved 40 year old sofa. The effect is wonderful and with no nasty chemical smells as found in some leather balms. The leather feels and looks well nourished.

    Fantastic product

I have an old dark green leather 3 piece suite which is beginning to show its age, I bought a jar of Gilboys Leather Balsam to try on it and I am extremely pleased with the result .
It’s brought the first seat cushion back to looking like it should do…. I can’t wait to do the rest and have my suite back to looking smooth and welcoming again.
Thank you Simon for a super product I would highly recommend it.

    Old black leather chair

I was watching a programme on the TV and saw your product being used and thought I’d order some and give it a go. The chair is dried out and the leather is beginning to crack. I started on the arms and it was hard to remember not to overload the sponge. The result is excellent the arms look so much better than before. Am now going to do the whole chair and think it’ll be good.

    Quality product

My Scandi chair had been in someone's loft for years and was in a dreadful, dry, dusty state. Gilboys leather balsam has made the leather feel very supple. The finish gives a lovely sheen but is not shiny, which is great. I've also used it for my Eames chair and am doing my Chesterfield sofa bit by bit. This product goes a long way. I would recommend it.

New life in an old pouffe!

I bought a leather footstool on ebay for £25 to accompany a new armchair. It needed to be brought back to life so I searched for organic leather conditioner more out of curiosity to see if such a thing existed. Enter Gilboys into my life! Speedy delivery, thoughtful packaging, a light, fragrance-free natural conditioner that does the job and that will last. Really great value for money. See photos for before, during, after and forever! Thank you :)

    Too marks all round.

The quality of this product is as good as the ethics. It’s conditioned my natural leather sofa beautifully. In the pics you can see the sofa beforehand and the one cushion I had conditioned. Once thoroughly soaked in, there is no sticky residue to feel. It looks and feels lovely. I have a log burner which dries the leather out so finding this product has been a godsend.

Good for more than just boots!

Having used Gilboys furniture polish, I wanted to try their leather wax on some vintage leather luggage items. It was easy to apply, and not much needed. I opted to leave it to set for 12 hours and then buffed it to a gentle sheen. I'm very pleased with the look, although the only item I've yet tried in the wet is the binoculars case. The was worked very well, beading off the rain from a light shower. I shall be using this wax on some vintage leather camera cases after this trail.

    Beautiful Balsam - It's a great product!

    ‘Beeswax Leather Balsam’.

I have used your leather balsam on half of the leather sofa.
    It’s about 20 years old.
I’ll let you guess which side I have waxed; it’s quite obvious. 🙂
    Its a great product!
I have two sheepskin coats to do next, perhaps after Christmas 🎄

    Many thanks

    Gilboys leather balsom

I applied the leather balsam a couple of times now to revive a George Smith leather sofa - which was in a sorry state with scratches and dried leather - pictures attached show before and after image.
It is recovering nicely - the product is easy to apply leaves a non sticky finish when buffed ( I don't overbuff).
Very pleased & would use again . Packaging great idea to reuse box.

    Leather feed

I bought the beeswax leather balsam to soften up an old Puma leather knife sheath. After it’s treatment I can now bend the sheath in half. It now looks far better and the treatment has tightened the grip on my knife. I went on to treat two other sheaths and am very pleased with the results.

When only the best will do!

Leave it to the Gilboy's, to knock it out of the park once again with this product! Extraordinary!

Worked magic into my J.W. Hulme, soft leather briefcase. Restored the leather back to it's original suppleness, while adding a rich, slightly darker hue after applying. No residual stickiness or gummy feeling after, unlike many other cheaper products available.

In a day and age when the market is saturated with cheap, economical and sub-standard products and goods, it's encouraging to know companies such as Gilboy's, still exists. Their old-world recipes speak for themselves, and for those who appreciate the best, look no farther than Gilboy's.

    Many thanks fellas!
