The real magic of Gilboys Hard Wax Oil lies in its durability. This finish is highly resistant to scratches and scuffs, perfect for high-traffic areas like kitchen counters and dining tables. It's also water-resistant, safeguarding against spills and can withstand high temperatures from hot tableware or drinks.

HEAT RESISTANCE

Extensive trials show that our Hard Wax Oil offers exceptional resistance to high temperatures, such as those generated by hot tableware or drinks. We recommend two applications for optimal protection.

  • R12 Rating provides excellent traction on wooden surfaces
  • Independently tested on multiple wood types
  • Ideal for safety-critical areas like stairs and high-traffic zones

Slip-resistance rating R12 (Good)*. Tested in accordance with BS 7976-2 / UKSRG Guidelines and DIN 51130:2004 standards on Maple, Teak, Pine, Sapele, English Ash, English Oak and Iroko wood flooring.

Test Report for Pendulum Testing to BS7976-2 by Surface Consultants Ltd

*The R scale runs from R9 to R13, where R9 is slippery when wet, and R13 the least slippery. Floor surfaces that are classified by the DIN 51130 standard as R9 (or in some instances R10) will be slippery when used in wet or greasy conditions.

Our Hard Wax Oil provides excellent coverage on a variety of wooden surfaces:

Container Size Coverage Area
500ml 10m² approx.
1L 20m² approx.

Coverage varies depending on the porosity and condition of the wood. Testing on a small inconspicuous area first is recommended to determine exact coverage for your specific application.

8 HOURS

Average drying time for a single application

Our hard wax oil is made with natural ingredients. A single application will usually be dry in 8 hours. The drying time may extend in cold and humid environments.

Best Drying Conditions - The best drying conditions are achieved by applying the hard wax oil sparingly in a warm, well ventilated room.

Unlike traditional finishes, our hard wax oil is simple to apply with a cloth, brush, or roller, providing a protective, satin sheen to your wood. And with our professional trade tips, you'll have all the guidance you need for a flawless finish.

Application

  1. Ensure the wood surface is smooth, clean and dry before applying
  2. Use a good quality lint free cloth, brush or sponge roller to apply
  3. Apply two coats for best results on high traffic areas such as floors, kitchen worktops and dining tables
  4. Sanding between each coat is not always necessary but advisable for a smoother finish

Rougher surfaces may increase the drying time and will require more applications to achieve a smooth finish.

TRADE TIPS

  • On initial application, if possible, remove the excess hard wax oil with a lint free cloth as you apply it. This will help reduce the drying time.
  • Unlike traditional varnishes our hard wax oil is not a viscous coating and will perform much better if applied in multiple thin layers as opposed to heavy single applications.
  • Our hard wax oil is also very effective to use as a sanding sealer. Wipe it on bare wood and allow it to soak in for a few minutes. Then wipe away all the excess oil and allow to dry.

Environmental preservation is very important to us and we make every effort to ensure our products have a minimal impact on the environment:

  • This interior wood finish is composed of natural wax and oil, ensuring an environment that is free of hazardous chemicals, as well as completely safe for children. The absence of pesticides makes this product a reliable choice.
  • We are not driven by a corporate cost-reduction ethos. We select our components based on quality and sustainability rather than the cheapest alternatives
  • 100% Plastic-free recyclable packaging
  • Recycled cardboard and paper from FSC-approved mixed sources
  • Packing tape that is paper & cotton based with a water-based gum adhesive which can be recycled along with the cardboard boxes
  • No polypropylene-based tape. We use biodegradable raffia twine.
  • Our workshop roof is completely covered in solar panels and generates far more electricity than we consume

Water stained window sill sills.

I had some water stained window sills in our new property and intended to sand them back, seal and varnish(sorry). After watching your video comparing different finishes, I decided to try your hard wax oil. Delighted with the results. I can’t help but stroke them when I walk past. I also bought the wax starter kit, but the hard wax oil gave a very satisfying rich tone just on its own. Now looking forward to my next project. Isn’t wood just such a beautiful material?

Restored 1930s Doors

Had some 1930s doors dipped and they took a beating from the process. This hard wax oil saved my doors and made them beautiful once again. Applied three coats and then a final wire wool wax application and now they look beautiful again. Happy to recommend this product and will use again.

I was commissioned to re finish a 22ft Victorian

I was commissioned to re finish a 22ft Victorian dining table. The table was heavily French Polished. The polish was so thick and opaque the grain was barely visible. After spending 5 hours stripping which was back breaking work. I then soaked in meths. Sanded and finished with 150. I stained the original D ends and 1 original leaf (Cuban Mahogany) in a brown mahogany LF stain. The remaining leaves were newer and of inferior quality. These needed more attention. I left the stain overnight. I applied a coat of oil using the rag supplied which was a great product. I needed to tint the oil to darken the newer leaves. These needed more depth the tinted oil worked well. I gave the top a 320 de nib. Then applied another clear natural top coat. The table looked fantastic. A beautiful Sheen. I was going to apply some wax . But I decided the table looked good as it was. Brilliant product I am using it again. The lint free rag was brilliant and I should have bought 2.

Easy to apply, looks good and is durable

I first used it on a kitchen floor to replace some weird gunk put down before that had worn away in heavy traffic areas. I applied the hard wax oil, which is very easy to apply, just rub it in. Over two years later the hard wax oil finish still looks good.
I'm about to do another floor and expect it will come out well.

Hard wax oil, wonderful product, beautiful Oak finish.

Many thanks for this product! I recently renovated my house and have a lot of oak—including skirtings, architraves, staircase, and floors. This product is wonderful and natural-looking, and it really enhances the wood beautifully. I was so impressed that I ordered another.

I also want to say that when I called for advice, your team couldn’t have been more helpful. The hard wax oil worked fantastically, and I’m very happy with the result—I haven’t even needed to use the full tin of beeswax pure gold which is unopened and in its original package.

Return Request:
Since I haven’t used the beeswax, would it be possible to return it? If not, I’m happy to give it as a gift.

Great Hard Wax Oil Finish and Great Company

Recent complete Kitchen overhaul and decided to put up an Oak shelf to compliment the cupboards and rest of kitchen, then the task of what finish to use. Came across Simon on youtube describing his own Hard Wax Oil, asked a few questions to which Simon responded promptly so purchased the HWO. I have been very impressed by the product and also by Simon and his team. They come across as very caring, professional and helpful. I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone.
I have attached a few photos of the shelf. I had purchased 2 planks and the shelf offcut I finished with 2 coats of the oil same as the shelf, so used this to try and put into context.
Again Highly recommend.

Excellent Product & Top Notch Customer Service

Was introduced to The wonders of Gilboys watching an influencer o You Tube restoring furniture. I purchased several items.
Not only did they arrive quickly, they were expertly packaged and there was a personalised note which is a lovely touch.
The oil is superb and goes on easily. Note to self a little goes a long way!
Vey impressed. On another note I asked a few questions directly to Simon. He answered with reassurance that I had not ruined the furniture (over using the oil!!!) and he gave me tips on what I needed to do.
What a brilliant company.

Easy to use great results

found an old nearly black (multiple layers of stain and varnish)draw leaf table every single joint was rickety. knocked it apart, stripped the wood, sanded, reglued, washed with meths, resanded and too finish 2 coats of hard wood wax oil with a light sand in between. The table is absolutly splendid now very impressed with the results and ease of application. Can't wait to use again on my next project

Idiot proof results

And yes I'm the idiot :)

As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

So the doors are the same cheap B&Q oak veneer product, with the one on the left after 1 coat of hard wax oil. The oil has done a great job of enhancing the door.

Very impressed

My dining table had been showing its age so I decided to lightly sand the top and apply French polish but couldn't get the desired finish. A well known liquid wax resolved the problem but despite using table mats the heat damaged the surface. By chance, an episode of Salvage Hunters mentioned Gilboys and an online check seemed that the hard wax oil was the product to use.
The table top was stripped and then stained with a light oak before applying the first of 3 coats of the oil with a soft paint brush. The table was lightly sanded with 400 grade before each of the 2 other coats were applied. I am impressed with the result, a soft sheen without any evidence of brush strokes , with the surface sealed and heat proof. The only downside is the wife now wanting me to do some other furniture! Pictures show the table stripped (no 4), with stain (no 3) and 2 pictures of the finished table.
