Port of Genoa – CHARLES EUPHRASIE KUWASSEG (1833–1904)

This fine view of the Port of Genoa is similar to a view painted in 1869. The physical size of the port of Genoa is Kuwasseg’s ideal size – his most valuable and important paintings are always this exact size. The attention to detail is superb and the location can still be recognised today from existing points of architectural interest.

Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg was the son of Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg. Initially Charles Euphrasie trained and worked with his father but later became a sailor and travelled the world. Upon his return to France in 1883, he began his formal artistic training and studied under Durand-Brager and Eugine d’Isabey.

Charles Euphrasie specialised in painting landscapes of the Breton and Normandy coast, seascapes of the North Sea and scenes of the outskirts of Paris. He collaborated with the artist Poilpot on a series of different landscapes.

Kuwasseg exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français from early on in his career and won a 3rd class medal in 1892. He later became a professor of art, teaching some notable pupils such as Emile Clarel.
