Walter Duncan (1848-1932) ~ “The Morning Walk” ~ Oil on canvas
Walter Duncan ARWS
(Academy Royal Watercolour Society)
Walter Duncan (wikipedia page) was born in Hampstead London in 1848; the son of Edward Duncan, a watercolour painter of formidable talent. Walter himself became a painter in oil medium as well as watercolour and gouache. His chosen subject matter was figurative, marine and historical scenes. He became a member of The Old Watercolour Society and exhibited from 1869 and also exhibited at The Royal Academy on a regular basis.
The Morning Walk with three young ladies and great danes is a beautifully painted scene with the waves cascading on to the beach. Judging from the facial features, two of the girls may be sisters. The playful dogs chasing the sticks held by one of the victorian ladies is a past time that has never changed with dog owners. The high cliff line may well be in the county of Dorset, where Duncan had a holiday cottage.
Walter Duncan was evidently proud to be associated with Academy Royal Watercolour Society as we can see he added the initials to his signature in the bottom right-hand corner of the painting. The frame is original and the artist may well have selected it himself.
Walter Duncan continued to paint in London until his death in 1932; his paintings are listed in Liverpool and London, museums and fully recorded in Benezit Dictionary of Artists vol 4 pg 862.
