“THEY’LL WANT US AGAIN” (1905)
Original oil on canvas, signed Alfred W Strutt

Dimensions: 26.65 x 45.04 in (67.7 x 114.4 cm)

Alfred William Strutt (1856-1924) came from a long line of painters. His father, William Strutt (1825-1915), was a prolific artist of animals and portraits, who was born in Teignmouth, Devon, moved to Australia in 1850 and produced an important record of early colonial days.

Alfred was born in New Zealand, before his family returned to England in 1856, where he was educated at the South Kensington School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879.

The acedemic quality of Strutt’s work is reflected in our painting, which depicts a car, which has broken its wooden spoked wheels, much to the mismay of its occupants, who are out for a picnic, in the heady days of the motor car at the start of the 20th century. Our research indicates the the car appears to be most likely a rear-entrance tonneau DARRACQ, a fine and well-known french motor car of this period. Four horses raced to the scene of the accident and formed a group, appearing fascinated by the strange machine.
